Asian Beach Games 2008

Asean Beach Games 2008 is the 1st Asian Beach Games started on the 18th of October and concluded on the 26th. An innovation of the OCA, the Beach Games have brought together seventeen sports, competing for Olympic medals around the Bali locations of Sanur, Nusa Dua, Serangan Island and Kuta Beach. Beach Volley Ball, Surfing, Jet skiing, Wind Surfing, Beach Takraw, Beach Hand Ball, Beach Soccer, Para Gliding, Dragon Boat Racing, Triathlon, Marathon Swimming, and the new sport; Wood Ball are the sports to competed in.
Most sports are new to the Olympic family and entry is only through National Olympic Committee nomination. Within Asia surfing is a new and very underdeveloped sport in terms of organization, but the OCA see it as a mayor youth sport and have been willing to give it a change to shine in its arena.

As a host Indonesia is still the one hard nut to crack , with its first gold clinched by Made " Garut' Widhiarta in surfing , and the winning streak kept on coming from that moment. Pencak silat followed as those large golden coins kept on flowing into Indonesian pockets. While the crowds appeared to be down at this inaugural event, maybe due to the entrance cost and lackluster promotion the games went ahead without a hitch with a major police presence keeping all on the straight and narrow.
